ACTIVE SCHOOL
Active School CommitteeOur Active School Committee is made up of 2 students from First, Second, Fifth and Sixth classes.
We meet most weeks on a Friday and work hard to retain our Active School Flag in Castlesampson! With the help of the committee, the whole school- staff and students- are kept informed on our quest! |

Games
Children are covering many different games in PE including soccer, gaelic football and hurling with outside coaches. We love learning from these experienced coaches from our local clubs. We also have a coach who works on Fundamental Movement Skills with us too.
Swimming
Students from First to Sixth Class have finished six weeks of swimming lessons. We have loved the whole experience, from travelling on the bus, teaming up with our partners and of course, learning how to swim.
We have learned many skills including different strokes, diving, entering and leaving the pool and even life saving skills!
We are looking forward to having a visit from one of the coaches to teach us the PAWS programme.

We had a very interesting visit from Rosie who works with Water Safety Ireland in April. She taught us lots of water safety tips on how to keep ourselves and others safe in and around water. We learned how to put on a life jacket and use a ring buoy. Thank you Rosie!

Gymnastics
We love gymnastics!
We are learning sequences involving a bench and mats. These sequences progress in difficulty as we go along. It was fun as they include symmetry, which we have learned about in maths!

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
|
Couch to 5k!We trained for months for our couch to 5k running initiative. Trainings happened during P.E. lessons, at lunch times and after school. We followed an accessible routine which allowed for all levels of fitness to join in. The intensity built up week by week and the children were amazed to compare the difficulty of later sessions to previous weeks. Parents and family members joined our afterschool trainings and followed our running plan. After the weeks and weeks of training, Castlesamspson National School headed off to Pearse's Football Club to run 5 kilometres. We couldn't have asked for better weather as we set off on our run. So many people joined our students on their challenge of running 5,000 meters. It was a tough but rewarding experience and the students and families were amazing! Well done to everyone who took part! |
Activity of the WeekEach week the Active School Committee chooses an Activity of the week for the whole school to play together at small lunch.
So far our favourites have been the bean game, domes and saucers, pass the hula hoop, duck duck goose and stuck in the mud! |
|
Playground LeadersEvery Thursday, at big break, the senior room act as playground leaders.
They set up activity stations for the Junior Room. The stations make use of the vast array of equipment we have in our storage shed. Each week they create new, innovative stations to engage the Junior Room and work towards the all essential 60 minutes of physical activity. Stations have included our parachute, skipping, hula hoops, balls, cones, goals, bean bags.... the list goes on! The students spend about 5 minutes at each station before moving to the next one. This is proving to be a great way to spend a lunchtime- as the pictures show! |
|
Active BreaksWe have been very lucky this year to not have too many wet breaks. But when we have been forced to stay inside, we have stayed active by having active breaks! This included dancing, Go-Noodle, exercises and active games! This way, even when the weather doesn't allow us to go outside, we can still reach our 60 minutes of exercise a day! |

PARTNERSHIPS
Operation Transformation 10@10We loved taking part in the 10 @ 10 on the 10th of February! We all gathered into one room and worked out for 10 minutes straight.
We completed exercises like running on the spot, star-jumps... and even the dab! From junior infants to sixth class, everyone tried their hardest, worked up a sweat and had fun doing it! We plan on incorporating it into our weekly schedule on our quest to earn our second Active Flag! |
ACTIVE SCHOOL WEEK
MondayOur Active Week started off with a bang when Tommie Costello visited the school to run a bootcamp for the day!
He put all the children through their paces and they worked up quite a sweat! The workout included running, exercises, obstacle courses, challenges and even a bit of limbo-ing! It was a fun, enjoyable day which was aided by the sun shining throughout! A big thank you to Tommie for training the children! |
|
TuesdayOn Tuesday, Avril and Michaela Smyth visited the school to teach the children some impressive dance moves!
The junior room learned a variety of dances and performed them for the rest of the school! The senior room learned a complicated dance, with lots of intricate moves and performed their dance for the rest of the school also! A big thank you to the Smyth sisters for a great day dancing! |

WednesdayWednesday, with the sun shining down on us, we headed off to explore the village of Castlesampson. All staff took part and took in the fabulous sights our locality has to offer. We visited a well, met a newborn lamb, took a pit stop at one of Matthew's horses and even met a donkey!
We had so much fun exercising that we didn't even realise we were doing it! |
|
ThursdayOn Thursday, with the sun shining once again, first to sixth class headed off to the fabulous pitch and putt course in Bealnamulla to try out their golfing skills!
We loved the experience and lots of the children have decided to return with their parents! Back in Castlesampson, the junior classes were taking part in a highly competitive game of hockey! They worked up quite a sweat and had great fun doing so! Another wonderful day's experience. |

FridayFriday was our big finale! We invited parents and the whole school community to take part in our day of fun!
In the morning we had active stations including an obstacle course, a bouncing castle, a throwing activity, a hoppers station and a skipping station. Between breaks involved jumping games and parachute games. After big break we had our fun runs with the egg and spoon race, sack race, wheelbarrow race and sponge race! It was a great day and finished off an amazing week! |
